Gorilla Facts:

  • Elk Point Economic Development Corp is trying to acquire options on about 12 to 15,000 acres of land in Union County.
  • Gorilla project is to have 2000 to 2500 full time high paid technical employees when it is in operation.
  • Project is to take 2 to 3 years to construct with up to 10,000 construction employees at the peak.
  • Footprint of facility is to be about 1500 to 2000 acres with the rest being classified as “buffer zone”.
  • Project will use approximately 12million gallons of water per day for cooling.
  • Authorized agent of EPEDC is Richard E. White.
  • Richard E. White was a Sr. VP of Marathon Oil (retired 1999) instrumental in real estate acquisitions.  Mr. White had only worked for one company his entire career.
  • Richard E. White is on the board of trustees of Findlay University and the “Skytrust” board of Sky Financial.
  • In 2003 Marathon sold its Canadian operations to Husky Energy.
  • Transcanada Pipeline “Keystone Project” is scheduled to run from Alberta to Patoka, IL and also Cushing, OK.
  • Transcanada already has pipelines going to Patoka, IL and Cushing, OK
  • Transcanada pipeline will be 30 miles from Union county.
  • Patoka, IL is the hub for a large pipeline network.
  • Transcanada pipeline is supposed to carry 435,000 barrels per day.
  • General consensus among oil experts is that new refinery capacity costs $25,000/barrel day of capacity.  Existing capacity can be expanded for $16,000/barrel day.
  • Gorilla project is reported to be $6 to $8 Billion.
  • A new refinery is in the works in Yuma, AZ that will refine 150,000 barrel/day and employ 600 full time workers.  www.arizonacleanfuels.com
  • Marathon Oil has signed a deal with the government of Qatar for a $4B deal that will refine natural gas to liquid fuels.
  • As told by the realtors, there is an individual big money investor behind the project.
  • Per the realtors the project may also go to Kansas.
  • Also, per the realtors there is a chance this could land in China and the US deal would be called off.
  • Also, per the realtors the Gorilla Project has been in the works since fall 2005.

 

Interesting tidbits

  • Governor Rounds 2010 Initiative calls for SD to be a net energy exporter.
  • Zyvex establishes nanomaterials prototyping facility at SD School of Mines in Rapid City, SD.  Part of 2010 Initiative.
  • Carbon nanotubes are an emerging technology that may be used in aerospace industry.
  • Spirit Aerosystems is also working with carbon nanotubes.
  • Conoco refinery in Ponca City, OK was developing a carbon fiber plant to be collocated with the refinery.  It was big news in Ponca City that a lot of high tech jobs were coming to town.  Carbon fiber plant was dissolved rather abruptly several years ago.
  • From the projected employment numbers a refinery by itself does not add up.
  • The potential for spin off industries to collocate near a refinery seems to be a possibility.
  • The local grapevine has it that this will be larger than just one industry.
  • A premium is being paid for farm land in this area and the possibility that someone is speculating that the land price will go up with the development of an industrial park is an option.
